A medical professional by training, Brigadier General Ekpo holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Calabar and postgraduate qualifications in Health Planning and Management from the University of Maiduguri and Public Health from the University of Lagos. During his distinguished career in the Nigerian Army, he held senior appointments in formations and institutions in Nigeria and abroad. His logistics and resource-management experience was strengthened through advanced training at the Nigerian Army College of Logistics, Lagos, where he was the Best All-Round Student on the Logistics Management Course, and through the International Logistics Officers Course at the Defence Logistics College, Deepcut, Surrey, United Kingdom.

At the Nigerian Army College of Logistics, he served as Directing Staff and Chief Instructor in the Department of Management and General Studies, training military personnel in the Military Decision-Making Process. This work further developed his strategic analysis, leadership development, systems thinking, and institutional capacity-building capabilities.

Following his retirement from active military service, Brigadier General Ekpo moved into business and public-sector leadership.
